...while the next part of my Scotland trip highlights was meant to be the topic of this post, I got somewhat distracted by a recently made cushion cover, (mostly because I have such a crush on the vintage barkcloth I used to make it with!...) that, well, I decided to post about it first so I could share it with you...
So, what do you think?... Isn't this lovely old barkcloth perfectly scrumptious?!... A generous piece of it has been collecting dust on my shelves for quite some time now and, given my resolution to start using up some of my favourite vintage yardages to make cushion covers, I decided to cut into some of this loveliness to do just that...
Now, I do think this landscape-themed cotton barkcloth, which probably dates back to the middle of the last century, is as beautiful as fabric gets; its nubby texture which gives this type of fabric the name "barkcloth" (reminiscent of the bark of a tree) is very distinctive here,...
...giving this cloth so much delicious character...
I love the way the barkcloth's monochrome pastoral scene is brought to life: with a punch of colour from the striking floral spray in the foreground and those absolutely perfect strokes of metallic gold, accenting the fabric beautifully in bright light,...
...as well as in more muted light...
It could have simply been a sweet country pattern illustrating a pretty scene of a tree by a fence and a charming well (hence, my Make a Wish... title for it!), but instead, a very inspired designer decided to make it so much more dazzling than that, don't you think?!...
Luckily, the barkcloth's pattern repeat works nicely for cushion sizes of 50 cm (about 20 inches), the size I've settled on making covers for. If this wasn't the case, I would definitely think twice about cutting into what is precious fabric, and I do really mean "precious" as I'm pretty sure that it would be rather hard to find more yardage of it today!...
As backing for the cushion cover, I opted for a solid with a lovely cottony hand in a beautiful taupe colour, which I think harmonizes nicely with the barkcloth's greys, pinks, and browns; most importantly though, this fabric is textured which I think works so well with the nubby barkcloth...
A concealed zipper which complements the cushion's palette was found and sewn in, and then the cover was popped onto the cushion insert...
The covered cushion was then thrown onto the chair...
...and then the bed to see if it works with the room's decor... Yes, I do believe it does! In case you're interested, I have listed this cushion cover in my Etsy shop here; if you should be interested in a pair, please send me a note...As mentioned earlier, I will be back shortly with more on my recent Scottish jaunt... Thanks for popping by!
Beautiful material!
