...I know I promised you a Christmas cushion post but I got rather sidetracked this last week... In an effort to clean up the house before the holidays, I started on a bit of yarn housekeeping or "yarnkeeping" as I like to call it. My yarn collection has grown way beyond a couple of baskets and, even though I still like to use a few baskets to store it in, it is mostly stored now in cabinets (like the ones below) which are in the hallway of our second floor...
...and which used to look more like this before...
All the yarn in the photo above is the cotton yarn I've been using to trim all my pillowcases over the last years; I've amassed a substantial stash of it since I could never seem to have enough colours! However, I've started to move away from cotton lately, preferring to use lovely linen yarn for my pillowcase trimming; so because I'm not using it as much any more, this last week, I decided to pack up all my cotton yarn into boxes and stash it away for the time being. I then replaced all this cotton yarn with all my woollier yarn like the stuff in the two baskets on top of the white cabinets which you can see in the photos. Luckily, the extent of all my linen yarn at this point still fits into one basket; it also probably won't get much larger for now, since I find that there really isn't that much linen yarn out there to collect and the available colour ranges are still rather limited. Now I will have to figure out new ways to use all my cotton yarn!...
I have to confess that I really have a soft spot for 100% wool yarn, so I'm very happy to have it closer at hand where I can see it every day, as opposed to it being tucked away in boxes under beds or dark corners of the house as it was before. And, I especially like to be able to see in plain sight some of my vintage yarns with all their sweet labels like the one above...
I've been coveting the Ikea apothecary-like glass cabinet above (photo from Var dags rum) in that yummy shade of green for quite a while now, and I've always thought it would be perfect for yarn storage as you would be able to see the yarn from all sides. Well, I have one now and I stuck it by the stairs in the corner where all that cotton yarn used to be; I then stuffed it with the part of my woolly yarn rainbow which goes from green to blue via aqua and turquoise -- a very yummy part of the rainbow as far as I'm concerned! Now, every time I go up and down the stairs, I'm as pleased as punch when I look at all that woolly scrumptiousness!
A big part of my reason in moving all this woolly yarn into a more accessible spot in the house is that I've started to use it much more lately and will definitely continue to do so into the new year, something I hope to share with you soon... If all goes according to plan, I'll be back here at least once again (with my Christmas cushion this time as promised) before Christmas... Thank you so very much for visiting with me today!...
What a lovely spot to store your treasures! I believe that if we see the yarn, inspiration is more likely! That can be a good thing or an overwhelming thing! It's all lovely!

Great way to store yarn, I find I sometimes forget what I already have because it's tucked away out of sight. Hx

I just found your blog and I love it! I have a lot of cotton yarn too and with the cheaper cotton I've been making dishcloths. A couple of us in my crochet group bought a dishcloth pattern booklet and I've been sharing the yarn with them in an effort to use it up. Love the reindeer cushion. Merry Christmas!

I love to stash too, this gives me inspiration for storage, because I am at my happiest when I can see all my lovely yarn and pretty things. Happy new year. Sarah
