...in this post, I thought I would show you more than just the fronts of the cushions I've shown you in my last two posts; the fronts are all right but, as far as I'm concerned, all the fun happens in the back because that's where I got to use my crochet hook and some yummy woolly yarns!...
When I started thinking of making cushions, I knew I wanted to use some of my favourite fabric, preferably vintage, with larger scale patterns, whether floral or not. This being the season for all things woolly, I decided to back them with wool fabrics, 100% or blends. While I wanted to keep the design relatively simple, I still wanted to include some crocheted detail... but what?...
As I started looking at my wool fabric to figure out which would work well as backing fabric, I couldn't help but think how much I love wool fabric, especially the tweedy ones with coloured flecks in them; they made me think of the Donegal tweed yarn as well as the socks I bought in Ireland (here) and all the lovely sweaters I saw during that trip... With thoughts of socks and sweaters, ribbed cuffs came to mind and how they just might work in my cushion design. So, I grabbed my crochet hook and some woolly yarn (digging out all my tweedy balls!) and started to play around with the idea of ribbing; after a fair amount of doing and undoing, I finally came up with what you see...
The cottage cushion you see in the forefront of most of the photos is a bit of a favourite because of the cottage fabric itself, a beautiful vintage barkcloth I've been saving up for something special. The idea to use the triple-coloured work-sock-like ribbing came about when I put the lovely cottage fabric against the wool plaid I ended up using as backing; it evoked cozy images of a field stone and clapboard cottage where woolly plaid blankets are piled high and snuggled with and homespun socks, when not keeping toes warm, are hung by the hearth to dry.... Neither the colours of the plaid backing nor the ribbed cuff are a perfect match for the colours of the cottage fabric but, somehow, I think it all works... There is still another detail in this cushion design that I'd like to show you which I've saved up for my next post, so I hope you'll pop by again to take a look... Thanks for the visit!
They are very special - fronts and backs!♡

It works very well, I love the cottage fabric and it all pulls together well with the band of crochet. Hx
