...what to do with baskets of felted wool scraps left over after making a few of these patchwork blankets? It seems to me that these scraps are much more precious than normal fabric scraps because of all that's involved in felting the wool from old sweaters; for one, there seems to be less wool sweaters to choose from in thrift shops (more and more blends as well as acrylics) and getting them felted just right often requires repeated washes in the machine. But don't get me wrong, I love the entire process because you're never quite sure what the wool will look like at the end -- it's all a bit magical...
So while pulling things together for Hycroft, the idea of some kind of garland to embellish the beautiful windows in the room came up and I immediately thought about all my baskets of woolly scraps... et voilà: 5-yard lengths of woolly garlands!
I will be bringing some of these over to Molly's shop in Vancouver as well as trying my hand at selling some in my Etsy shop (All sold out -- Thanks!!). While I've packaged them in vintage Christmas wrapping, I do think that they can work as great room accents well beyond the Chrismas season, especially in children's rooms -- what do you think?
P.S. My garland was included in this very sweet Etsy treasury created by Tiffany...take a look -- you might find a perfect holiday gift! (Dec. 3)
I think that's a lotta circles to cut out of wool and that they are really beautiful! I'm sure they'll sell immediately, Beata. Hope Hycroft was a major success...couldn't make it over sadly.

Using the ric rac is a pretty idea, I made some a few months ago using cheap felt and embroidery floss. They did quite well on my market stall see here if you would like to

It is soo sooo pretty, just there has to be an easier way to just "punch" out circles.

They're lovely! I just wish proper wool felt was still generally available in fabric/craft stores.

Definitely great for children's bedrooms - nice and colourful!
Completely agree about scraps, I can never get myself to throw any, even little bits of wool - I'm keeping it all in a bag, I might be able to stuff something with it all one day!

What a great idea. I have all sorts of scraps left over from making felted mittens, this would be a great way to use them.

Brilliant. Soft and cuddly garlands. Thanks for not getting mad at me for using your picture at my place. I guess I should have asked first but I got carried away. Good luck and selling those garlands. I am sure they will go like "butter in sunshine" (we say it in Swedish and it sounds so much better than when I translate it into English...).

Beautiful! You give me so much inspiration! I'm going to have to pay a visit to some thrift store to find some old wool sweaters!

I LOVE your woolly blanket! Just gorgeous. I know what you mean about it being harder and harder to find wool jumpers in charity shops, so much acrylic or mixed fibres around, or non-shrink wool, just as bad. I got obsessed by rag rugging at one point, and have a large stash of felted jumpers in my old studio, I've been thinking about making a dress with some of them, one of the many things I've got on my to-do list. Your garland is a fabulous idea too, and they look beautiful, thank you so much for sharing your ideas with us, you're very generous. Love Vanessa xxx
