Marie-Antoinette and yo-yos....

A few months ago, I was inspired to make a fanciful little girl's dress embellished with yo-yo's. Shortly after, I spotted the mirror ball dot fabric and thought it could be made into very festive yo-yo's, perhaps sewn onto a Christmas dress. I then happened on this gorgeous Christmas garland at our neighborhood plant nursery, Figaro's Garden, and was further inspired. Lastly, I went to see Sofia Coppola's "Marie-Antoinette"  and  was completely smitten by le look of the movie; the very pretty bonbon-esque layering of fabrics, trims, ribbons and sheen has been on my brain ever since...With all this jumble of eye-candy in my head, I came up with this little girl's dress just in time for Christmas Eve and, given that today is  New Year's Eve - a time when some of us don glamy little dresses-, I thought I would show you some shots I took of my 7-year-old daughter twirling in her new festive little dress -

the gingerbread man...

A while ago, my 10-year-old daughter's teacher, knowing full well that I err on the "crafty side", asked me if I would like to come up with a Christmas sewing project to do with the children in her class. Thinking that it was a great idea for many reasons, I quickly accepted and eventually came up with the idea to sew an 18" gingerbread man out of felt; I adapted a pattern I found in a vintage Christmas craft book and came up with this little fellow  -                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            After showing him to the children and giving them a basic tutorial on how to make him, we all got to work.....                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             ...and three full mornings of very intense work later, the children came up with this bunch of very jolly gingerbread men -                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Aren't they great with all their individual touches!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                From beginning to end, this project was such a rewarding experience for me... The children simply amazed me with their infectious enthusiasm (they wanted to skip their recesses to keep working on their little men), suprising abilities and very original ideas! Most of all though, I was so touched by the proud smiles they had on their faces once they had put the final touches on their little men...Now that, I'm certain, will be one of the finest Christmas presents I'll ever get....                              

the last of the pirates...

...at least for the next little while...I like all things "pirate" and so does my daughter who turned 7 on Sunday - yup, you guessed it, we had a pirate-themed birthday party for her. So, inspired by little birds pirate birthday party post and her link to this pirate cake , I came up with my own version of it -  (as you may be able to tell from the photo, icing cakes is not one of my stronger suits...)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            As decoration, I made something I've been itching to make for quite a while now: a pirate flag banner -                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Now that was fun to make!                                                                                                                                  Tomorrow, 'promise: a Christmas post ...(I just had to squeeze this one in!)

I will be back tomorrow with some pirate tales (I wasn't able to take any decent photos today because it was a very bleak day in Vancouver)... Wait a sec' - did I say pirates?...with Christmas but one week away, why am I still writing about pirates?!...

...to all who visited me at the Farmers'  Market Christmas Fair this last Sunday and made it such a success for me and for all the other vendors! Since Monday though, I have been suffering from Post Craft Fair Recovery Syndrome, i.e., having to catch up on all the sleep I lost prior to the fair... hence, my lack of blogging in the last few days! I think I've somewhat recovered, although I must admit that my list of things to do in the next two weeks seems rather daunting...(I'm sure I'm not the only one facing such a crazy list though!)                                                                                                                                                                                                                            As you can see in the above photo, I made use of  my "snow girl" from my three little girls  collection as part of my table display and I'm so happy I did as so many people commented on it; some people simply liked it and others actually remembered the girls from their own homes and where they came from - I have to thank zuzu  for first solving the mystery of the three little girls  for me!                                                                              

I thought I'd show you some pictures of what cost me my sleep last week -                                                                                                                                          I should mention here that I have a definite sense of accomplishment regarding my horse cushions - I started with the intention of making a dozen and I actually did so! In the past, whenever I tried to do the "assembly line thing", I  would always start with great enthusiam which would quickly fizz out and leave me with only a few completed items...                                                                                   A big thank you! to all of you who have been taking a moment from your undoubtedly very hectic pre-holiday schedules to read my blog...

cowboys and bedding...

Today, I felt like celebrating because I finally finished two identical bedding sets - each made up of a duvet cover and two pillowcases - which I was commissioned to make a little, ahem, while a go... It was one of those projects where it seemed that everything that could have gone wrong did so, with the worst being a serger that broke down in the middle of assembling the covers... Anyhow, they're done and now that I've tried one on a bed, it doesn't look half-bad. I did decide to make the cowboy cushions to complement the look - whether the customer wants them or not, we'll have to see...                                                                                                                                       Two brothers who share a bedroom will inherit this bedding and, while most people would probably think it's definitely "boy bedding", my daughters, aged between 4 and 10, all want it on their beds - perhaps it has something to do with the barkcloth cowboy cushion trimmed in that cool fake suede fringe...Now, if you want to see something  definitely for girls and absolutely charmant, take a look at jane and the ducks's photo of a silk skirt she whipped up for her daughter as well as a photo of Marie-Antoinette little girl dresses from Paris...
